What to do next

How to use Translate PDF

  1. Add your PDF

Drop the file. The text is read on your device and the language is detected for you.

  2. Pick the languages

Choose the target language. Add names or terms that must stay as written in the "Do not translate" box.

  3. Translate

The first run downloads a language model once (about 100 MB), or uses the translator built into Chrome when it has your pair. You can cancel at any time.

  4. Check and save

Compare the original and the translation side by side, then download a new PDF, a Word file or plain text.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to translate it?
No. The text is read and translated in your browser. No server sees your file and no translation service is called. After the model is downloaded once, the tool also works offline.
Which AI model does this use?
When your Chrome has its built-in Translator API for the pair, that is used first (it runs on your device too). Otherwise TabShed runs Opus-MT models by the Helsinki-NLP group (licence CC-BY 4.0), converted to ONNX by Xenova and hosted on Hugging Face, with transformers.js (Apache-2.0). Each language pair is about 100 MB, downloaded once and kept in your browser.
Will the translated PDF look like the original?
Approximately. Headings, paragraphs, lists and tables are kept, and page breaks stay where the original pages ended. The text is typeset again in a clean font, so columns, exact positions, images and backgrounds are not kept. For a Word file you can then adjust the layout by hand.
How good is the translation?
The offline models are small, so they are good for understanding a document and for first drafts, but weaker than large online services on long, idiomatic or technical sentences. Check names, numbers and legal text before you rely on them.
Which languages work?
English, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian and more. Pairs without a direct model go through English, which needs two models and can lose some accuracy. Korean, Thai, Turkish and Polish can be translated from, not into.
Can it translate a scanned PDF?
Not directly. A scan is a picture with no text. Run it through OCR PDF first, then translate the result.
