What to do next

How to use Translate Document

  1. Add your file

Drop a .docx, .txt, .md or .html file. It is read on your device and the language is detected.

  2. Pick the languages

Choose the target language and list any names or terms that must not be translated.

  3. Translate

The first run downloads a language model once (about 100 MB), or uses the translator built into Chrome when it has the pair. Cancel any time.

  4. Save

Read the original and the translation side by side, then download Word, PDF or plain text.

Frequently asked questions

Is my document uploaded?
No. Reading and translating happen in your browser. No server sees the file. Once the model is downloaded the tool also works offline.
Which AI model does this use?
Chrome’s built-in Translator API when your browser has the pair (on-device too), otherwise Opus-MT models by Helsinki-NLP (CC-BY 4.0, ONNX versions by Xenova on Hugging Face) run with transformers.js (Apache-2.0). About 100 MB per language pair, downloaded once.
What is kept from my Word file?
Headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and pictures. Bold, italic or a link is kept when it covers a whole paragraph; mixed styling inside one paragraph is simplified. Headers, footers, comments and text boxes are not translated.
Can I translate an old .doc file?
Not directly. Open it in Word and use Save As .docx first.
How good is the translation?
Good for understanding and first drafts, weaker than large online services on idiomatic or technical text. Check names, numbers and legal wording before you rely on it.
What about PDF files?
Use Translate PDF: it reads the text of each PDF page and keeps page breaks.
