What to do next

How to use AI Summarizer

  1. Add your text

Paste text from an article, email or web page, or drop a PDF, Word (.docx) or text file. Files are read on your device.

  2. Pick length and format

Short, medium or long. Bullets, key points, one paragraph or a one-line TL;DR. The summary is written in the language of your text.

  3. Choose an engine (or leave Auto)

Chrome's built-in AI is used when your browser has it. Otherwise the quick summary shows the key sentences at once, and you can download a small AI model (about 500–800 MB, once) for a written summary.

  4. Copy or download

Copy the summary or save it as a .txt file. Long documents are split into parts and combined for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text or file uploaded?
No. The AI runs in your browser on your own device. Your text, PDFs and Word files never go to a server, and there is no account or limit. After the model is downloaded it works offline.
Which AI model does this use?
Three engines, from best to simplest: (1) Chrome's built-in Summarizer API (Gemini Nano) when your Chrome has it, (2) Qwen2.5 0.5B Instruct by Alibaba Cloud (Apache-2.0 licence; about 790 MB on a computer with WebGPU, 510 MB without), run with Transformers.js (Apache-2.0) and hosted on Hugging Face, (3) a quick extractive summary (TextRank) that uses no model and always works.
What is the difference between the quick summary and the AI summary?
The quick summary picks the most important sentences from your text and shows them as they are. It is instant and cannot make mistakes of its own, but it does not rewrite. The AI summary writes new sentences, so it reads better, but a small model can miss a detail or phrase something loosely: check important facts against the original.
How long can the text be?
The quick summary handles books of text. The AI engines split a long document into parts and combine the notes; on a computer with WebGPU that is about 40,000 characters (roughly 7,000 words) in full. Beyond that, and on devices without WebGPU, the tool first picks the most important passages and says so.
Can it read a scanned PDF?
No. A scan is a picture without text, and this tool does not do OCR. Run OCR PDF first, then summarize the result.
Does it work on a phone?
The quick summary does. The AI models are large and slow on phones, so use a computer for them. If your device cannot run a model, the tool falls back to the quick summary and tells you.
