What to do next

How to use Text Similarity

  1. Paste both texts

Put one text in box A and the other in box B. The result appears as you type.

  2. Choose what to ignore

Ignore case and punctuation if small formatting differences should not count.

  3. Read the match

The big number is how similar the texts are. The cards show word order, shared words and same lines.

  4. See exactly what differs

Press "See the differences in detail" to open both texts in the diff checker, highlighted line by line.

Frequently asked questions

How is the similarity percentage calculated?
For texts up to about 5,000 characters it is 100% minus the edit distance (Levenshtein) divided by the length of the longer text. Longer texts are compared by words, or by shared words when they are very long.
What is the difference between word order and shared words?
Word order counts a word only when it is in the right place. Shared words only asks which distinct words appear in both texts, in any order.
Can I use it to check plagiarism?
It compares two texts you provide, so it can show how close a rewrite is to the original. It does not search the web.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.
Does it work for other languages?
Yes. It compares Unicode characters and words, so any language that separates words with spaces works; for other scripts the character measure is the better one.
