Frequently asked questions

Is this password generator safe?
Passwords are made in your browser with the Web Crypto random generator (crypto.getRandomValues), the same source used for encryption keys. They are never sent to a server or stored.
How long should a password be?
16 characters with mixed types is a good default. Use 20 or more for important accounts, and let a password manager remember it.
What does the strength bar mean?
It shows entropy in bits: the length times the log of the number of possible characters. 80 bits or more is very strong against offline guessing.
Why avoid look-alike characters?
I, l, 1, O, 0 and o are easy to confuse when you must type a password by hand. Turning this on removes them.
Are my settings saved?
Only on this device, in your browser. The passwords themselves are never saved.
