Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and the photo is processed there. The first removal downloads the model (about 230 MB including the runtime, once); after that it is stored on your device and works offline.
Which AI model does this use?
LaMa (“big-lama”) by Samsung AI Center, released under the Apache-2.0 licence, in the ONNX export by Carve (Carve/LaMa-ONNX). It runs through ONNX Runtime Web (MIT) with WebGPU when your browser has it, otherwise on the processor.
How fast is it?
With WebGPU (recent Chrome, Edge or Safari on a computer with a graphics chip) a removal takes about a second after the first start. Without WebGPU it runs on the processor and takes roughly 30 to 60 seconds per removal. Starting the model takes up to half a minute each time you open the page.
Does it keep the full resolution?
Yes. Only a patch around the painted area goes through the AI and it is blended back into your original photo, so the rest of the picture is untouched and the file keeps its size.
What can it not do?
It invents the missing background, so it works best on small and medium objects on textured or simple backgrounds: people in the distance, signs, wires, spots, tourists. A very large area, a face or text it has to guess can come out wrong. Remove one object at a time and use Undo if a fill looks off. Phones with little memory may fail on big photos; a computer is safer.
Can I remove several things?
Yes. Each removal becomes the new photo, so paint the next object and press Remove again. Undo steps back through your removals.
