Why Laser Cutters Need SVG Files

Laser cutters and engravers (Glowforge, xTool, Epilog, Trotec) use vector paths to define cut lines and engraving areas. The laser follows these paths with perfect precision. Raster images (PNG, JPG) can only be engraved — not cut — because they don't contain path data.

Laser Cutting File Requirements

  • Cut lines: Thin strokes (0.01mm or "hairline"), usually red or a specific color
  • Engrave areas: Filled shapes, usually black
  • No gradients in cut paths
  • Closed paths for cut outlines

Converting PNG to SVG for Laser

  1. Create/find a PNG design (high contrast, black on white)
  2. Convert to SVG using PNG to SVG Converter
  3. Download the SVG
  4. Open in Inkscape (free) to review and clean up paths
  5. Set stroke to hairline for cut paths, fill for engrave areas
  6. Import into your laser software

Tips for Clean Laser SVGs

Simpler designs give better results. Avoid thin details smaller than 0.3mm — the laser beam has a kerf (width) that will burn away very fine details. Black and white source images convert most cleanly.
